Our mission here at Heartland Recovery is “To seek out those who are suffering and provide a refuge for healing where we will teach them life-changing biblical truths, train them through discipleship, and equip them with the practical tools they need to be sent out to serve their community and Church and live life successfully through Jesus Christ.”

This edition of our newsletter doesn’t even scratch the surface of everything that has taken place in our third quarter of 2026, but it’s great to look back and take time to celebrate a few of those moments. Walking Through Recovery | Richard’s Story

Richard from Pittsfield, Illinois, knew the grueling reality of the justice system all too well after spending 29 years going in and out of prison. The turning point came in a moment of pure providence when a guard accidentally printed two Heartland Recovery applications instead of one and handed Richard the extra copy. Passing up options that would lead him right back to his old habits, Richard realized it was time for a different choice. “If I wanted something different, I need to be prepared to do something different.”

Choosing Heartland’s 12-month program opened the door to a brotherhood and peace Richard had never known. Surrounded by leaders who shared similar pasts without judging him. Today, Richard is building his future on a firm biblical foundation. As Richard puts it: “If you gave up now, you’d be right back where you started. And where you started, you’d be wishing where you are now. Don’t give in.”

What a night at Heartland’s “Salute to Freedom”! We loved celebrating Independence Day together as a church and as a nation. A special congratulations to the two amazing men who graduated from our 12-month recovery program! We finished off a beautiful night with cupcakes and fireworks.

Walking Through Recovery | Daniel’s Story

At 35, Daniel from Kansas City was trapped in a cycle of depression, job instability and suicidal thoughts, losing his identity after his college sports days ended. His rescue came in a “godsend” moment when an agent from Ozark National Life Insurance (who happened to be a Heartland Recovery graduate) was visiting his father’s house and led him to the 12-month program. Daniel found true transformation when he grasped the reality of spiritual freedom. “Being risen in Christ and having Him live inside you frees you from the sin and the bondage,” Daniel shares, “walking in the freedom of that and knowing that there’s hope.”

Now viewing life through a Christ-centered lens, Daniel is heading home to his supportive family and a new church community, free from his past shame. He urges anyone currently drowning in their own dark thoughts to take a leap of faith. As Daniel puts it: “Give Jesus a chance. He is the truth, and He will free you if you give your heart to Him.”

Addiction & The Church Conference

Jesus came to set the captives free, and we know that the church is called to be His hands and feet to help do just that. When the church puts faith into action to embrace those with substance abuse disorders and those coming out of incarceration, we are reminding them they were “Made for More” and can find their identity, purpose, and calling in Christ Jesus. (Ephesians 2:10)

Join us for a free one-day conference sponsored by Heartland Recovery, designed to inspire pastors and their congregations to identify, support, and welcome individuals impacted by addiction and incarceration and help them find a place of belonging in the local church.

Session speakers include pastors and professionals who have many years of experience ministering in various aspects of addiction recovery and incarceration.
