Jessen’s arrest served as a wake-up call, making him question the purpose of his self-destructive behavior. “I didn’t even know why I was getting high… It took everything.” Caught in addiction Jessen came to Heartland Recovery.
At Heartland Jessen found hope and peace. He acknowledges the damage he caused but remains grateful for God’s guidance and restoration, understanding that healing takes time. When asked what advice he offers others caught in addiction, he emphasizes the importance of finding support within the church community, emphasizing, “Get to a church, man. He’ll snatch you right up and show you you’re not alone.”
As a ten-year cocaine addict, Scott knew what a life of turmoil was like. He finally sought help at a local church where the pastor worked with him one-on-one, but eventually recommended Scott apply to the Heartland Men’s Recovery Program. Thirteen years later, Scott is sober and now on staff as the Assistant Director at HMRP.
“God has given me peace, but I am not that special,” says Scott. “He’ll do it for anybody, that’s what the Bible says. I’ve seen so many people, so many men that walked through this door just beat down by life, and after a few months you wouldn’t even know that they were drug addicts. I’ve heard that said so many times. So, God can do it for you too!”
“Being an addict, you don’t really want the change, but you get fed up with the things happening around you.” It wasn’t until the third time Virginia lost everything—including custody of her kids—that finally brought her to a place where she could admit that she needed help. Homeless, living in the back of a truck, Virginia opened up to God and said, “God just please get me out of this situation, this is selfish addiction that is causing me to lose my family and lose everything that I have.” And He did.
It took an intervention by her sister to set things in motion with the ultimatum, “It’s either Recovery or you lose your family.” Virginia enrolled in the Heartland Women’s Recovery Program and over the course of the next twelve months, God began the healing process.
Now as she continues her journey of walking through recovery, Virginia encourages those in a similar situation, “Just ask for help. There are people that are out there that care, including Heartland.”

Paul battled alcohol addiction for most of his life and although he tried to get help, it just never seemed to work. After crashing his car, Paul told himself, “That’s it! You’re gonna die if you don’t quit doing this.” With some help from his sister-in-law, they looked for a faith-based program and found Heartland. “This gave me a good solid start. I have a good church home when I leave here so I’m ready for that, looking forward to it.”
What about you, have you headed down a wrong road? Through his testimony Paul now encourages others, “What you need is God to intervene in your life and to follow Him.” Please take the first step to getting on track.
